Sunday's Column - Harvey House, Barstow

Like many Brits before and after, Fred Harvey left his native England and came to America to seek his fortune.  That was back in 1853 and having worked as a bus boy and waiter in New York he found himself working for the railroad in New Orleans.  He founded the chain of Harvey Houses which became at the time the America's first restaurant chain.  This Harvey House in Barstow is one of the last to be built and can be visited, although it's original  function closed in 1971.  You can read the entire article at http://www.sbsun.com/lifestyle/20140111/harvey-house-welcomes-visitors
