Chataway
On Sunday last Chris Chataway died at the age of 82. He was quite a famous Englishman, having made his name in politics and also in TV for many years. But it was as a runner that I most remember him. On May 6, 1954 he and Chris Brasher paced Roger Bannister in the first sub four-minute mile. I remember listening to the race, which was held in Oxford, with my father, who was very interested in athletics. Later on the race was shown on TV and I still can see the tremendous finish of the race with Bannister coming through to burst the tape at 3:59.4. Here is a shortened commentary - very stylized with the music in the background - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uz3ZLpCmKCM
